Emerald questions

Is an emerald durable enough to wear every day?

Emeralds are hard (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) but they almost always contain natural inclusions, so a hard knock on an exposed corner can chip them. Settings that cover the edges, like a bezel, protect them best. Take it off for the gym and heavy work, and it will last.

What does “treatment” mean?

Most emeralds are treated with oil or resin to fill tiny surface-reaching fissures and improve clarity. It's standard and accepted, but the type and amount affect value, so we list it for every stone and back it with a lab report.

How do I clean it?

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners; they can remove the oil in the stone.

Can I see it before I buy?

Yes. Book a live video viewing, or visit the showroom at 5 S. Wabash Ave, Suite 1010, Chicago by appointment.
